There have been some really stunning films that have been made over the years on a shockingly low budget, such as The Blair Witch Project, Brick and Slumdog Millionaire. These examples show it can be done. Here are some simple tips I think would help towards low budget success:
1) A Creative, Engaging and Captivating Script
This is the foundation of any good film, whether there's a big budget or small. The script will always remain the most critical part, so ensuring its strong and engaging is very imperative.
2)Creativity and Originality
The way films are recognised is because they are innovative and something new and original. There are a multitude of the same mainstream films out there, to stand out, original ideas need to be brought to the table. Clearly with a low budget huge special effects cant be done, creative ideas the are a instead of, must be thought of.
3)Alternative Filming Locations
On a very low budget film makers aren't going to be able to rent out huge studios such as Pinewood etc. There will have to be a lot of compromise on location. This is done fabulously in the film Brick. An American high school is where the majority is filmed and because the director as shot it in alternative areas of the school it looks far less tacky. A low budget director would have to think along these lines.
4)Unknown and Willing Actors
Clearly a low budget film maker isn't going to be able to employ the big Hollywood names when it comes to acting, even the names in Great Britain. This doesn't mean to say that this will decrease the quality of the film. A film maker would have to find willing amateur or unknown actors to volunteer to be in the film.
5) Strong Marketing
Getting the film out into the open is the key convention for the final product. Without this, it will have all been for nothing.
